STUN GUN BASICS

A stun gun is an electronic device which, when discharged emits an intense electric charge to temporarily incapacitate an attacker, by short circuiting his or her nervous system, giving you an opportunity to move away from that area. Stun guns are considered non-lethal.

A stun gun emits an electronic charge between prongs located at the end of the device. The Taser® fires darts from several feet way. The darts are connected by tiny wires to the device. When the darts contact the attacker, they attach themselves. When you trigger the taser, an electronic charge is emitted along the wires, incapacitating the attacker. Tasers can cost several hundred dollars, while some stun guns can cost fewer than twenty dollars.

The stun gun can also be used as a deterrent by triggering the device before an attacker gets close to you. The sound and sight of the electrical discharge might cause him to flee.
